Single stories are used in rhetoric to persuade the audience to have a particular opinion on a subject. Rhetoric is used whenever language is intentionally involved to influence an audience. Using a single story is an effective way persuasion and is way of focusing on one main point of view. For example, ethos was used in the Lyndon Johnson commercial. The commercial is appealing to parents and grandparents who have innocent children and feel that we have an obligation to protect them. The commercial implies that if you do not vote for Johnson, you will be contributing to the fact that the US could be involved in bombings. When only a single story is used, you are not able to see the entire picture. Click here for more on this paper……. Only one perspective is given. This should always be considered when you see or hear anything. Always consider the source and their motive. The danger in single stories is that they are used to create stereotypes and form opinions based on one point of view. This creates an incomplete and inaccurate picture of the situation. It creates differences rather than similarities. In the Ted talk, many examples were given as to the negative stereotypes that Americans had about Africans and vice versa. I believe this is due to lack of educational diversity. You should view TV with a few questions in the back of your mind, who, what and why? Don’t listen to any one person or point of view. Make your own observations and opinions. Think for yourself. Do some research on a topic before forming an opinion. Keep in mind that there may be an agenda associated with the TV show you are watching. It may not be a bad thing but you should not watch blindl.
Single stories are dangerous because stories are so powerful, and particularly powerful when we do not know how much power they withhold. In presidential elections single stories are used with rhetoric to persuade and inform an audience. Click here for more on this paper……. I think single stories are dangerous when used to ad campaigns because valuable information may be misrepresented. The messages that are supposed to be presented to the public for a specific argument may be unclear and in concise, but have the power to grab the attention of the audience and sway their opinion. I have never really showed much interest in the stories in ad campaigns. I understand that the election is a competition and sometimes people will do anything to win. Once they have the attention of their audience and have won their vote, the single stories gain their power that many did not know they had. Click here for more on this paper…….
