Analysis and Commentary
Analysis and Commentary
Due Date
Monday 25 October 9am
Description Assignment Task 2 requires linguistic analysis of the provided texts, as well as interpretation of/commentary on the analysis. The focus of the assignment is to be able to undertake accurate analysis and to relate formand meaning, that is, to reason about what meanings are made and how and why they are made. You will also be required to draw some pedagogical implications from this analysis.
Your analysis and commentary needs to include a genre analysis, that is an analysis of the genre, stages and phases of the text. It is best to present this in tabular format. In addition to the genre analysis you will also need to include some analysis at clause level (e.g. process types, nominal groups, nominalisation), and some from ‘beyond the clause’ (e.g. periodicity, identification, conjunction, appraisal). Your full analyses should be included in the appendix of your assignment and is not part of the word count.
In your commentary you should discuss your analysis in terms of what it can tell you about the texts and their differences (in terms of field, tenor and mode). You should also comment on the pedagogical implications of this: i.e. what knowledge about language do teachers and students need to be able to produce these texts and similar ones? How can students be enabled to improve upon their writing
