A 33 year old man was presented to the local urgent care complaining of vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping and fever. The symptoms were present for 4 days in total and began with stomach cramping and diarrhea. The patient was dehydrated upon presentation and had a low grade fever of 100.2 F. The patient was hooked up to IV fluids to alleviate the dehydration and a history was taken by the attending nurse. In the past week before the symptoms began, the patient worked a few days and had the weekend off. On the weekend he didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. The patient works at a restaurant as a line cook but was the only apparent ill person from the establishment. He has contact with cats and dogs at his residence (along with a litter of 6 week old puppies). and some laying hens. He was ding a couple of projects over the weekend that involved various tools to be used to build some new nesting boxes for the hens. A stool sample was taken and revealed a Gram negative curved shaped rod bacterium. This organism was shown to be a highly motile(corkscrew motility) microaerophile.
