Having accurate counts of fish populations is important to prevent overharvest. There are various methods a fisheries biologist may use to gather an accurate count. Some of these methods include aerial surveys, counting towers, weirs or sonar. Each type of sampling method requires numerous factors to be met in order to gather accurate samples. Choosing the right sampling method may be tricky for fisheries biologists, but hands on experience and knowledge of sampling methods will lead the biologist to make the right selection. Eme (2014) describes aerial sampling methods to be one of the most cost effective ways to gather population size of fish. However, this method is very inaccurate. This is because biologists fly over a body of water and estimate the number of fish present. Then, they estimate the total number of fish spawning. Aerial sampling was used in the Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean. The fisheries biologist on board used SCANS-II software to gather information. The biologists had to fly at an elevation of 750 feet and travel at 100 kts to gather accurate data (Panisada, Laurlano, Burt, Pierantonio & Donovan, 2011). Click here for more on this paper……. Another cost effective way to monitor fish populations and gather data is by using counting towers. Eme (2014) describes counting towers as a tall tower that sits up on a bank and allows the biologist to have a clear view of the river. A fence is erected from the other side of the river and leads to the tower to direct fish toward the tower. A light-colered plastic is also placed on the stream floor to give the viewer more visibility. In order for this population monitoring methods to be effective the streams must be clear, narrow and be placed in shallow spawning streams. Click here for more on this paper……. This methods is unfavorable by some fisheries biologist because there is no way to halt fish passage and a viewer must be in the tower 24 hours a day to get an accurate count.
The use of a weir also requires stream conditions to be clear, narrow and shallow in spawning streams. Eme (2014) explains weirs require biologist to place floating panels across a stream. This gives a fish the ability to swim downstream, but not upstream. In the center of the floating panels, a holding pen is placed and gathers fish. Click here for more on this paper……. This allows scientist the ability identify species of fish and their gender. Using weirs is very accurate, but also costly. Fish weirs are used Danube-tributary system in Austria to monitor fish migration. The use of weirs was required because flooding was causing ecological problems and fisheries biologists wanted to ensure migratory fish were still moving downstream. Overall, the use of weirs was very effective. 15, 952 fish were gathered and consisted of 46 different species Click here for more on this paper……. (Zitek, Muhlbar & Schmutz, 2009). Weirs give fisheries biologist the ability to go “hand-on” with fish, which results in precise monitoring.
The last type of monitoring methods discussed will be the use of sonar. Sonar is a very effective way to monitor fish populations, especially in muddier river systems where fish cannot be easily seen. Eme (2014) states sonar used transducers, which sends a solar beam across the river are installed along the bank of the river. Click here for more on this paper……. Weirs or panels are used in conjunction with sonar to guide fish to the sonar beam so they can be counted. If species must be identified, then nets have to be used in order to properly identify such.
Now since I have been educated on fish population monitoring it is time to put my skills to work. In the first scenario I am asked to have a more accurate count of the amount of fish spawning in Windy Creek. I know the creek is clear, narrow and shallow. Based on this information alone I will select the use of a weir. Click here for more on this paper……. This choice is based on the need for the account to be more accurate. A weir will allow me to count fish, identify its gender and identify the species. This monitoring method is very costly, but is required based on the direction I was given from my supervisor. As I complete this task I am now challenged to complete another one and get the most accurate count of fish I can get. This time, it is located at Raging River, a muddy river system. Based on the information I have, I will select a sonar population monitoring methods. Click here for more on this paper……. Since I cannot see the river bottom, I will have to place transducers along the bank of the river and will have to use panels to force the fish to swim further out towards the panels. This method is very accurate, however it is costly and will require a lot of work to setup the sonar system properly. Once complete, I will be able to record information on a computer, which will make it easy to get numbers. However, if I need to get information on species types, I will have to use nets, which will require even more work.
