Many critics have read Franklin’s Autobiography as a statement about American national identity. His book conveys many stereotypically “American” ideals (e.g. hard work, individualism, self-education). In “The Late B.F.,” Mark Twain offers a different perspective on Franklin’s didacticism. The Franklin that emerges here uses maxims and aphorisms to rain in the parades of scores of American boys, who desire only to sleep, play, and goof off. Twain’s piece, then, offers an ironic view of Franklin as an icon from a late-nineteenth-century perspective. Write some of your own reflections on Franklin from a twenty-first-century perspective. Which values and qualities of the legendary American forefather trouble you, and which do you embrace?
